Intellectual Property Theft - new report from Symantec

The theft of critical company data can cause huge problems for information technology managers with potentially other areas of the business looking to the IT department for security advice. The findings of a new report from Symantec shows the risk is not necessarily from external threats.
The report called 'Behavioral Risk Indicators of Malicious Insider Theft of Intellectual Property' shows the reasons why employees might steal such data, a typical profile of an ‘IP thief’ and how companies can protect themselves. As well as HR practices such as pre-employee screening, it advises implementing appropriate data protection policies. The policy should ‘monitor inappropriate use of IP and notify employees of violations, which increases security awareness and deters insider theft.”
Whether your responsibilities lie in data management, technical support or network infrastructure, this report looking at internal IT threats could be a valuable read. http://www.symantec.com/about/news/release/article.jsp?prid=20111207_01
